The question of how to build a perfect school is one I would consider; if I founded a school or found myself running one. Although perfection is not attainable it is certainly a goal worthy of pursuing. My school would teach tolerance not only by lessons, but by actions. Children watch what we do more than what we say. When a child or adult is prevented from expressing their personal identity they are rejected. The feeling that something is wrong with them is buried in their schemata and the pillars of their self-concept are weakened. Such feelings often are expressed by self-loathing, anger toward others, depression, or social isolation. Children should be taught acceptance and celebration of individual differences whether they be religious, racial, ethnic, social, or gender identity. When a child is rejected for what they are they suffer, but their classmates also suffer; for they have learned a lesson of intolerance by actions and not words. Shame on you Kathy for hurting children. You’re old enough to know better.
